The March Project is a world premiere duo between
Dino J.A. Deane (LapSteel Dulcimer & Electronics) and
Tim Motzer (Guitar & electronics).

We met at Punkt Festval 2009 in Norway as Tim was
performing upstairs (with Ursula Rucker), Dino was
downstairs in another theatre sampling Tim's fuzzguitar
for the Punkt Remix (with Jan Bang, and Adam Rudolph).

We have a pretty good idea of the terrain we will be
traveling based on our musical backgrounds, that will
cover looping, drift, electronics and layering (from extreme
beauty to the very intense sonically).

Dino J.A. Deane
Over his career multi-instrumentalist, sound-designer, conductor Dino J.A. Deane has demonstrated an innovative approach to the world of music. Deane pioneered the use of live-electronics & live-looping in Indoor Life a popular art/punk band from San Francisco during the early 1980's. There he played trombone controlled synthesizer that emulated the sound of an electric guitar. Soon afterwards he was touring the world as the electro-acoustic live-sampling percussionist with Jon Hassell.That collaboration resulted in the ground breaking Power Spot recording for ECM in 1986, produced by Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois. During that same period Deane became a close collaborator in Butch Morris's real-time composition creations called Conductions and in 1995 co-produced Morris's epic 10 CD box set Testament for New World Records. Deane coined the term live-sampling, which means to record members of the ensemble while in performance, manipulate the sound and play back the recorded audio as part of the piece, all in real time. He is considered a master in this field of performance. Deane also has an extensive background in sound-design for theater and dance working with writer directors as diverse as Sam Shepard, Julie Hebert and Christoph Marthaler. Deane is sought after by music festivals, instrumental ensembles, spoken word artists, theater companies and conservatories worldwide for performances, projects and workshops.

Tim Motzer
TIM MOTZER is a guitarist, composer, artist, remixer, music producer, and label owner. In the last 15 years, his music and guitar playing has made an impact in both the Philadelphia scenes and internationally—touring the world with poet Ursula Rucker for the last 11 years among others. His guitar work is featured on over 60 albums and remixes to date. His record label—1k Recordings—is focused on producing his own creative works and collaborations: Goldbug, Nucultures, Jazzheads (featuring Ari Hoenig), Secret Voices (featuring Ursula Rucker), Tilomo, Tim Motzer & Markus Reuter, Base 3, and more. He's recorded, collaborated, and performed with Les Nubians, Julien Lourau, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, King Britt, Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit (CAN), Kenny Lattimore, and Nine Horses (featuring David Sylvian and Steve Jansen). In 2005, he scored scenes for the original motion picture Miami Vice, and co-produced the critically acclaimed Ropeadope album 'King Britt presents: Sister Gertrude Morgan. He continues to be involved with film music (HBO's True Blood), and music for the world of dance (Group Motion, UArts). Contrasting their previous studio release, Philadelphia-based trio Tim Motzer, (baritone guitar / electronics), Doug Hirlinger, (drums), and Barry Meehan, (bass / electronics), have drawn together a serious of live performances from 2009, knitting them into an expansive, continuous suite that’s constantly boiling over with adventurous and often ingenious interplay.

Tracing an intriguing map made from waves of interstellar glissando, sepia-tinged hybrid blues licks, locked-down beats, and sparkling electronica-induced atmospheres, they maintain a tightly-controlled environment that’s often dense but never cluttered.

Impeccably sequenced, it gracefully processes from the impressionistic squall of Ninth Ward, and the repetitive, jagged rockface of God Particle, through to The Unanswered Call. A 33 minute-long psyche-prog shadow play that combines fluid expression and instinctive judgement calls bordering on ESP, it’s the undoubted triumph of the album.

Hirlinger’s compact skittering grooves ripple and buzz like well-crafted, concise dramas, telling tales via skins and metal, producing stuttering interjections against Meehan’s unflappable focus.

Throughout the album, Motzer’s kaleidoscope excursions intrigue and entertain. However it’s here more than anywhere else on the album that his swaying, sustained guitar lines most ably communicate a lonesome, remote reverie with all of the exquisite eloquence of a tautly drawn haiku.

Yet another project utilizing the skills of ultra-productive creative mastermind Tim Motzer. BASE3 is the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based trio comprised of Motzer, Doug Hirlinger, and Barry Meehan. The tracks on Live From Earth utilize plenty of technology-driven sounds and spontaneous improvisation. These tracks are from two live performances...the first 41 minutes were recorded at The Fire in Philadelphia while the final 33 minutes were recorded at the Gojjo Sci-Fi Jazz Series. These three guys feed off one another in obvious ways, making these free-flowing progressive psychedelic compositions trippy and unique. In some ways this is a throwback to the heady music of the 1970s...but in other ways these guys are forging new sounds directly tied to the twenty-first century. Killer packaging...wildly inventive sounds...what more could you ask for? Our favorite cuts include "Ninth Ward," The Collider," "After Shock," and "The Unanswered Call." In a live setting the band really shows their experimental side, with more than a slight nod to improvisation. This is probably best exemplified with the album ending epic "The Unanswered Call", an amalgamation of ambience and electronic soundscapes with excellent East Indian guitar motifs. Other notables include the chilling "God Particle" where moody atmospherics of guitar and electronics blend into an absorbing jam session and the feedback/loop filled "Ninth Ward" with its brazen blasts of wild guitar effects and spacey electronics.This is an album filled to the brim with jam band aesthetics and spacey atmospheres that make for a rather other worldly listening experience. It is best enjoyed with a good set of headphones. Recommended for psychedelic and space fans everywhere.

Exploring the hypnotic low-end, the avant-garde power trio of Base 3 probes into the dark depths of experimental post-rock. With the lineup of Tim Motzer (baritone guitar/electronics), Barry Meehan (bass/electronics), & Doug Hirlinger (drums/percussion) the seminal groove vibe is persistent throughout Live From Earth, as the organic jam session finds itself induced by various electronic nuances/samples as well as feedback, electric hum run through effects, phasing, and delay to spring the opposition to any paint by numbers scheme. The album itself is bold with the musical faction sounding cinematic, like a soundtrack to an edgy film, with a jazz influence in "God Particle" & "Killshot," semi-industrial chill on "The Collider," and a free-form frenzy on "Aftershock." Live From Earth may not be all out melodic, but at least it's real, honest, and interesting - as being a pop band is not the priority for Base 3; the record is most certainly a headphone listening experience where you feel engulfed in the music with it's raw magnetism. ****Tommy Hash/Ytsejam

Global illage Duo performs this Saturday eve June 11 at 8 p.m. as part of a performance series curated by Ron Kravitz called "Rons Underground". Its a wonder, and a unique environment—7pm community drum circle followed by a performance downstairs at 8. A discussion about the music and its methods will follow.

Master percussionist JIm Hamilton has played and recorded with Marshall Allen (Sun Ra Arkestra), Warren Smith, Odean Pope, Zakir Hussain, Dom Um Romao, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, among many others. Hamilton and Motzer have a long history of improvising together, most notably with their band Global illage, as well as in duo performance. Bart has performed with Dave Douglas, Butch Morris, the

This month's 1k Sessions, our 6th episode and first of 2011, will feature cellist Helena Espvall joining guitarist Tim Motzer in a duo of ethereal improvisations.

Helena Espvall, most notably, has been part of the ethereal psychedelic folk outfit Espers. The Swedish-born multi-talented cellist, guitarist, and improvisor has collaborated with other artists such as Fursaxa, Oluyemi Thomas, Masaki Batoh, Sharron Kraus, From Quagmire, Lukas Ligeti, Samara Lubelski, Eugene Chadbourne, Pauline Oliveros, Scorces, and Katt Hernandez. She has released one solo album (Nimis + Arx on Fire Museum) and has played with silent movie orchestras and Arabian music ensembles. In 2008, Helena performed with Damo Suzuki (ex.CAN) + Keiji Haino + Tatsuya Yoshida + Seiichi Yamamoto at the UFO CLUB in Tokyo, JAPAN. Helena also contributed wonderful cello work to 1k Recordings albums Nucultures - Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams, and The ZebraMoon Remixes.

On July 11, 1krecordings and web.illish.us kicked off a live in-studio webcast series called 1K Sessions at Philadelphia’s 1K Recordings Studio with a performance by avant-rock trio BASE3, which includes 1K label founder Tim Motzer. This monthly series will feature artists on 1K Recordings, as well as other international musicians. This innovative series is designed to allow fans a firsthand glimpse into the traditionally private and “band only” studio experience, while also transforming the localized studio space into an international performance venue.

Viewers from the Netherlands to Romania to the US were able to tune into an hour long, absolutely mesmerizing set by BASE3, featuring Tim Motzer on electric guitar and efx, Barry Meehan on bass, and percussionist Doug Hirlinger. Their debut album, Darkmatter, was recorded during a one day studio improv session much like this one, and it’s clear that the group works best in a live environment that allows unlimited freedom for their improvisational tendencies to run amok. While the trio establishes a solid groove for a foundation, their playing style is largely in-the-moment and constantly shifting directions, from contemplative, intergalactic ambience and bliss to feverish outbursts of extreme precision.

Anyone familiar with Motzer's 1 K Recordings label may have some idea of what to expect here. These exceptionally talented individuals create music that is somewhat of a cross between jazz, modern classical, progressive rock, and ambient experimentation. Rather than specific melody driven pieces, these compositions tend to pass by like ocean waves...with the ideas and intent behind the music being more important than exact notes or melodies. Five of these seven tracks were recorded live in the studio...while the remaining two were "reconstructed" by Motzer. Peculiar and dreamy...this disc comes from a decidedly distant universe. Compelling cuts include "Shadow Memory," "Unraveling," and "Persistence of a Memory."

"I have to admit that prior to receiving this exhilarating new project Goldbug, I was unfamiliar with the talents of Philadelphia based musician / composer Tim Motzer. Turns out that in addition to not only being an internationally known player who has recorded with the likes of David Sylvian and Jaki Liebezeit (Can) to name just a few, he is also an accomplished producer who has been running his own record label 1K Recordings for the past ten years as well.

Along with Motzer who handles guitars, keys, piano & laptop, Goldbug's debut album The Seven Dreams features a killer lineup of supremely talented musicians. First up we have Tim's longtime Base3 collaborator Barry Meehan on bass. Manning the drums Tim enlisted another Philly area native in Eric Slick who has been gigging with Adrian Belew's power trio for the past couple of years, and last but certainly not least The Seven Dreams is also graced by the presence of British sax & flute player Theo Travis.

The majority of the music on The Seven Dreams was basically cut live over the course of a couple of improvised sessions, with only a few compositions later being subjected to Motzer's sonic reconstructions. After the brief electronic tinged opening number "Shadow Memory" things kick into high gear immediately on "The Departure" as the downright funky rhythmic patterns and deep, meaty grooves laid down by Slick and Meehan take center stage, while Motzer applies thick layers of jazzy, textured guitar that at times sounds otherworldly. Next up is "Unraveling" which is one of the above mentioned reconstructed tracks. Highlighted by Tim's spacey analog synth splashes and Eric's cut-up, off kilter percussion work, this two minute composition segues seamlessly into the eleven minute tour de-force "Scratching The Third Eye". Much like "The Departure" this multi-faceted track is once again anchored brilliantly by the dizzying amount of tempo changes executed by both Slick and Meehan. The intensity gradually builds and builds as Motzer unleashes a plethora of sweeping electronic textures and fluid guitar runs overtop the repetitive piano melody lying just beneath the surface.

As if the majestic beauty of these first four tracks wasn't enough to satiate the listener, the superb melodies and sublime playing are enhanced even further with Theo Travis' contributions which come on the final three tracks of the disc. "Elevation" is the first track to benefit from Theo's deeply moving kaleidoscope of colors as he rips off a sizzling, extended sax solo over the course of the first half of the song before the backwards piano splashes and what appears to be the sound of a bubbling brook conclude the piece. The second extended composition "The Past Is Still Present" once again reveals Motzer's propensity for utilizing various different guitar textures and electronic treatments to create a wealth of dreamlike atmospherics. Sick's initial tribal beats give way to a distinctly more jazz based foundation before Theo finally enters the picture to close the track out with another one of his trademark ripping tenor solos. The smoke has barely cleared before the listener is quickly engaged in the final composition "Persistence Of A Memory". This is a truly sublime and subdued track, only this time it's highlighted not by a sax solo but by Travis' delicate flute work.

The rich, thought provoking, dreamy atmospherics employed throughout, along with the absolutely superlative performances turned in by each individual musician definitely makes The Seven Dreams a one of a kind listening experience from beginning to end, and one that I'm sure will remain etched in your brain long after the music has ended."

Following a concert they gave together, Tim Motzer joined Friedman and Liebezeit in the studio and crucially influenced 3 album titles. Motzer already appeared on the predecessor CD (Secret Rhythms 2, non19) and also provided guitar accompaniment to Friedman’s contributions to the Nine Horses (with David Sylvian and Steve Jansen, samadhisound). Originating from the Philadelphia Jazz scene, the guitarist’s activities include a creative partnership with Ursula Rucker and King Britt. It is Motzer’s acoustic guitar that links up with the 2005 vinyl EP (Out In The Sticks, non17), on which Motzer likewise played an important role.

"It's not important, but i like it if people dance to the music," said Jaki Liebezeit in a recent interview. "Sometimes it happens." The drummer is likely to get his wish with Secret Rhythms 3, his third collaboration with Cologne's dub deconstructionist Burnt Friedman. The album, their most muscular so far, is a study in music as movement. Liebeziet's drumming sets the pace on every song, and the duo's collaborators - improvising guitarist Joseph Suchy, Philadelphia's jazz- and soul-schooled guitarist Tim Motzer and Root 70 reedman Hayden Chisholm - fold themselves into the mix like tendons and sinews. Some of that is no doubt due to Friedman's touch as a producer. The studio remains one of his principle instruments, and his mixing helps to smear disparate contributions into a blurry totality. But these seven songs also sound as live as anything Friedman has done, less the product of clever studio constructions than of a real-time mind meld. the album's sheer physicality is helped by the fact that many of these rhythms do indeed seem to harbour secrets. Try as I might to count out the time signatures to "Morning has Broken', I fail, and yet nothing sounds 'difficult' here. Their loping pulses may be riddled with kinks and strange switchbacks, but they keep coursing forward, carrying the listener with them. Although melody takes a third place to rhythm and timbre, riffs and pointillistic daubs of colour create an expressive sensibility that's often lost in rigorously repetitive music. The album's most bruising song, "Entsafter", presents all the contradictions that makes the collective's music so exciting, somehow managing to squeeze grinding, 5/4 guitar strumming into the rigid, 4/4 grid of rock and dance music. Over the course of eight minutes, scabby electric guitar riffs and and unflinching keyboard ostinato whip themselves into a frenzy, and it's not difficult to imagine even a fairly conventional DJ using the track as the climax of a club set. That Friedman, Liebezeit and their colleagues are capable of sneaking their secret rhythms into even the most hidebound contexts only confirms the power of their beguiling approach to pulse.

Not only is it becoming increasingly hard to find an album that runs the gamut of several different musical styles, but all-encompassing double albums are even more of an anomaly in this day and age. But the Philadelphia collective Nucultures is not your average, ordinary band. On their 2007 two-disc set, Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams, the group (which is comprised of lyricist Ellie Perez, guitarist/producer Tim Motzer, and bassist/songwriter Barry Meehan -- all of whom also contribute vocals) issues a true musical potpourri. With a largely laid-back feel throughout and a mixture of electronic and acoustic instruments (additional players lend a hand), many of the songs sung by Perez are equally jazzy and sultry -- and slightly Portishead-esque -- especially such standouts as the album opening "Night Is Beautiful" and "Behind the Moon." But even Nostradamus couldn't predict the group's next move, as they manage to touch upon electro-acoustic-folk ("Think I'm Losing It"), breezy meditations ("Mind Dunes"), and soundscapes ("Amorphous Lake") -- all the while managing not to lose the listener. If it's laid-back but unpredictable pop that is equal parts jazz and trip-hop that you're after, Nucultures' Butterflies, Zebras, and Moonbeams will most definitely not disappoint. -- ALL MUSIC GUIDE Review by Greg Prato

the ex-CAN drummer jaki liebezeit and sonic scientist burnt friedman team up with a stellar cast of musicians featuring morton gronvad (vibes), tim motzer (guitars), hayden chisholm (reeds) and vocalist david sylvian. don't miss this record.

"Amazon Review:"Cologne-based artists Burnt Friedman (one half of Flanger) and Jaki Liebezeit (former Can percussionist) have a mutual fascination with non-Western rhythm structures. This second instalment of their Secret Rhythms project sees the duo continue their curious explorations of rhythmic time signatures beyond the traditional or at least ubiquitous (in Western culture) 4/4 format, addressing all kinds of styles and syncopations and flirting with world music and jazz along the way. The songs featured here are playful and naturally off-kilter, steering away from the wilful intellectualism of past Friedman/Liebzeit-related projects. Guitarist Tim Motzer, vibraharpist Morten Gronvad, bass-player Daniel Schroeter, singer David Sylvian and guitarist Joseph Suchy are drafted in to add texture, melody and harmony to the hypnotic structures, helping create an album that both mystical and mellow an ideal if idiosyncratic chill out option."

The follow up to 'Secret Rhythms', 'Secret Rhythms 2' eschews any fancy appellation adjustment in favour of reacquainting the protagonists Burnt Friedman (Scape) and Jaki Liebezeit for more percussion pressed goodness. Having earned his stripes as Can's drummer, Liebezeit is no stranger to the skins; coaxing a cavalcade of percussive elements into a cohesive whole that doesn't rely on its existence to keep things propelled forwards. Opening with 'Sikkerhed', Friedman and Liebezeit allow a fog of waterlogged atmospherics to slowly breach the almost tribal rhythms, acoustic guitar and lazy horns; leading to a sound highly reminiscent of Friedman's Nu Dub Players (even if it does share a melody with Girls Aloud's last single...), albeit stripped clear of the overt shrugging that characterised their output. Next up is 'The Sticks' (re-recorded here after it's appearance in 2005) wherein cut+sliced acoustica is given a wash of sun-set soundscapes and gradually toughening percussion, before David Sylvain contributes a tobacco stained vocal on 'The Librarian'. "about 4 years ago, i met burnt friedman, he of flanger and nonplace fame, at popkomm in cologne, germany. not long after my tour, i emailed him to suggest we do some music together. turns out, he liked the idea but was busy at the time and wanted to wait until there was a suitable project. on my next return to cologne a few years later, burnt came to our show, and suggested now was a good time and that jaki liebezeit would be involved. incredibly exciting stuff. burnt followed this a month or so later with about nine tracks as i recall that he sent me to create to. i loved the tracks and spent a few weeks in my studio working up multiple layered guitar parts for each track. the thinking was, that this would become the next friedman-jaki liebezeit record: secret rhythms 2. burnt and jaki loved the guitar tracks and i was very happy. shortly thereafter, things changed. burnt emailed me to tell me david sylvian had sung on 5 of the tracks. i've been a long time david sylvian fan, so this was incredible news. as time went on burnt mixed the record with sylvian's vocals, and sent a copy to each of us. as i understand it, david wasn't really happy with the mix, that it had lost some of it's fullness. so david asked to mix the record. burnt told me that he had sent him his hard drive with all our parts on there. amazing story. as it turned out, one of the tracks turned into 'the day the earth stole heaven' - a track that i had co-composed with burnt for the friedman-liebezeit record. it's a beautiful track, and to me takes you back to david's brilliant trees period. my guitars ended up on 3 other tracks 'a history of holes', 'serotonin', and 'the librarian' . the burnt friedman mix of 'the librarian' appeared on 'out in the sticks' a 12" teaser, and will also be on the forthcoming friedman/liebezeit album 'secret rhythms 2' due in january on nonplace. to me, nine horses is a brilliant album on so m any levels and reflects both inwardly and outwardly our crazy times. i think it represents some of david's best work. consequently, what started out as a chance meeting with burnt turned into two records and a 12" and a roomful of new friends. it's a privilege to be a part of such wonderful creative works. just proof that good things still happen in this crazy world."

SISTER GERTRUDE MORGAN (1900-1980) was a painter, singer and self-proclaimed "bride of Christ" whose visually explosive folk art is celebrated on the museum circuit world-wide. But her on album, made in New Orleans in the 1960's, is one of black gospel music's secret relics. Those recordings were unearthed and a limited number of copies were released to unanimous and widespread critical acclaim in 2003.
Ropeadope has procured the master rights and enlisted internationally acclaimed DJ and Producer King Britt along with guitarist/producer Tim Motzer to create an entirely new and ground breaking work, putting musical tracks behind the Sister's previously unaccompanied vocals.
The cycle of ten songs mixes gospel hymns with funk, soul, mississippi delta, and afrobeat melodies with Britt's deep percussive beats. The live ensemble will tour this unique project with a full multimedia performance featuring live video in late 2005.

Before Katrina was a drizzle over the Atlantic, King Britt and Tim Motzer were paying tribute to long-departed Preservation Hall treasure Sister Gertrude Morgan, laying down groovy, dancey backing tracks behind her glorious a cappella preachings. It's an amazing, timeless CD. And after the storm, hip-hop heroes The Roots turned their long-planned Kimmel Center debut into a fundraiser/upbeat revival. Black Thought, ?uestlove and company plucked the TBC Brass Band out of the shelters and marched down the aisle with 'em to start the show. Unforgettable.

Since their first collaborative album "Secret Rhythms" came out on Nonplace in 2002, Friedman & Liebezeit have been playing live all over the world, improving cyclic grooves and creating new ones. Paradoxically, their rhythms are difficult to grasp but easy to listen to. The 3 exclusive tracks for this vinyl only mini LP casually manoeuvre round the jagged rocks of "four-four time".

Jaki Liebezeit's signature drum-mantra is etched into the vinyl of the coolest moments of rock history, and the potency of his distinctive style is barely diminished since his legendary moments in the early 70s.

Burnt Friedman has again conspired with the upper echelons of the musically interesting, this time teaming up with David Sylvian.
During the process of remixing 2 of David Sylvian´s "Blemish" album tracks, both producers decided to start a new, ongoing project. Nonplace is proud to present their first collaborative piece, "The Librarian", featuring David Sylvian as vocalist.

In addition to Friedman and Liebezeit, guitarist Tim Motzer weaves funky touches all the way through. He has resided in Philadelphia, U.S. since 1985 and has been busy working with a virtual who's who of Philadelphia artists over the years including recordings and world tours with poetess Ursula Rucker, King Britt and the French duo Les Nubians.

Lined up for the group's live appearances is Hayden Chisholm, a New Zealander who is living in Germany since a decade. He contributed all horn melodies to this mini LP. Other guest musicians are Morten Gronvad, vibraharp and Daniel Schroeter, electric bass guitar.
