A true multi-media ensemble, Instant Takemitsu creates a multi-dimensional immersive experience through a shared vocabulary of abstract-impressionistic layering and real time composition of visuals and sonics. Drawing on the incredibly wide timbral palette that can be produced by vibrating metal strings processed through traditional guitar stompboxes, and refraining from the use of backing tracks, Tim Motzer and Dino J.A. Deane create a range of sonics, completely in the moment, that is amazingly similar to the palette created by composers such as Takemitsu, Messiaen, Debussy and Stravinsky using traditional orchestral instrumentation.
In a stunning reversal of the concepts of film scoring, Dejha Ti manifests a real-time cinematic vision on modular projection surfaces which are integrated into the physical setup of the musicians. The venue itself influences the unique sculptural design of the projection surfaces from show to show. Ti draws on a library of self generated visuals as well as from live capture of the musician's physicality, as they are playing, to create her part of the ensemble's collective composition.

====================
Instant Takemitsu is a world premiere duo between Dino J.A. Deane (LapSteel Dulcimer & Electronics) and Tim Motzer (Guitar & electronics).
We met at Punkt Festval 2009 in Norway as Tim was performing upstairs (with Ursula Rucker), Dino was downstairs in another theatre sampling Tim's fuzzguitar for the Punkt Remix (with Jan Bang, and Adam Rudolph).
We have a pretty good idea of the terrain we will be traveling based on our musical backgrounds, that will cover looping, drift, electronics and layering (from extreme beauty to the very intense sonically).
Dino J.A. Deane Over his career multi-instrumentalist, sound-designer, conductor Dino J.A. Deane has demonstrated an innovative approach to the world of music. Deane pioneered the use of live-electronics & live-looping in Indoor Life a popular art/punk band from San Francisco during the early 1980's. There he played trombone controlled synthesizer that emulated the sound of an electric guitar. Soon afterwards he was touring the world as the electro-acoustic live-sampling percussionist with Jon Hassell. That collaboration resulted in the ground breaking Power Spot recording for ECM in 1986, produced by Brian Eno & Daniel Lanois. During that same period Deane became a close collaborator in Butch Morris's real-time composition creations called Conductions and in 1995 co-produced Morris's epic 10 CD box set Testament for New World Records. Deane coined the term live-sampling, which means to record members of the ensemble while in performance, manipulate the sound and play back the recorded audio as part of the piece, all in real time. He is considered a master in this field of performance. Deane also has an extensive background in sound-design for theater and dance working with writer directors as diverse as Sam Shepard, Julie Hebert and Christoph Marthaler. Deane is sought after by music festivals, instrumental ensembles, spoken word artists, theater companies and conservatories worldwide for performances, projects and workshops. http://jadeane.com

"Guitarist TIM MOTZER and trombonist JA DEANE are masters of their respective instruments, yet they share a mutual fascination with electronica and experimentalism. Motzer’s made circuits dance either solo or in tandem with Jaki Liebezeit, Ursula Rucker, Markus Reuter, Burnt Friedmann, and many others. He owns and operates the eclectic 1k Recordings, which features everything from his superb IDM project Fractured Reverb Underground to his Base3 downtown fusion-funk outfit. Motzer's versatility and interests know no bounds, as both his eclectic label catalog and live performances demonstrages. Trombonist and sonic provocateur Deane’s pedigree is no less impressive: he's worked with Jon Hassell on the seminal "Power Spot" album, and performed with such luminaries on the avant-jazz scenes as John Zorn, Butch Morris, and Wayne Horvitz. Motzer and Deane’s new collaborative debut as a duo INSTANT TAKEMITSU should be nothing short of extraordinary." Darren Bergstein-1000 Pulses

BASE3_Live From Earth available now 74 minutes of absolutely essential BASE3. Transmissions of heat and spark, assembled from several astonishing BASE3 live performances in Philadelphia from 2009—featuring drummer Doug Hirlinger, baritone guitarist Tim Motzer, and bassist Barry Meehan.
release date: April 25, 2011
BASE3 is: DOUG HIRLINGER-traps TIM MOTZER-baritone guitar + electronics BARRY MEEHAN-bass + electronics
tracklist: NINTH WARD GOD PARTICLE the COLLIDER KILLSHOT AFTERSHOCK the PREMONITION 5_WARP THE UNANSWERED CALL
Contrasting their previous studio release, Philadelphia-based trio Tim Motzer, (baritone guitar / electronics), Doug Hirlinger, (drums), and Barry Meehan, (bass / electronics), have drawn together a serious of live performances from 2009, knitting them into an expansive, continuous suite that’s constantly boiling over with adventurous and often ingenious interplay.
Tracing an intriguing map made from waves of interstellar glissando, sepia-tinged hybrid blues licks, locked-down beats, and sparkling electronica-induced atmospheres, they maintain a tightly-controlled environment that’s often dense but never cluttered.
Impeccably sequenced, it gracefully processes from the impressionistic squall of Ninth Ward, and the repetitive, jagged rockface of God Particle, through to The Unanswered Call. A 33 minute-long psyche-prog shadow play that combines fluid expression and instinctive judgement calls bordering on ESP, it’s the undoubted triumph of the album.
Hirlinger’s compact skittering grooves ripple and buzz like well-crafted, concise dramas, telling tales via skins and metal, producing stuttering interjections against Meehan’s unflappable focus.
Throughout the album, Motzer’s kaleidoscope excursions intrigue and entertain. However it’s here more than anywhere else on the album that his swaying, sustained guitar lines most ably communicate a lonesome, remote reverie with all of the exquisite eloquence of a tautly drawn haiku.
This album can be summed up in one word: essential. *****Sid Smith Postcards From the Yellow Room (UK)-
BASE3 - Live From Earth (CD, 1K Recordings, Progressive/electronic) Yet another project utilizing the skills of ultra-productive creative mastermind Tim Motzer. BASE3 is the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based trio comprised of Motzer, Doug Hirlinger, and Barry Meehan. The tracks on Live From Earth utilize plenty of technology-driven sounds and spontaneous improvisation. These tracks are from two live performances...the first 41 minutes were recorded at The Fire in Philadelphia while the final 33 minutes were recorded at the Gojjo Sci-Fi Jazz Series. These three guys feed off one another in obvious ways, making these free-flowing progressive psychedelic compositions trippy and unique. In some ways this is a throwback to the heady music of the 1970s...but in other ways these guys are forging new sounds directly tied to the twenty-first century. Killer packaging...wildly inventive sounds...what more could you ask for? Our favorite cuts include "Ninth Ward," The Collider," "After Shock," and "The Unanswered Call." Cool and perplexing. *****Baby Sue
BASE3 - Live From Earth In a live setting the band really shows their experimental side, with more than a slight nod to improvisation. This is probably best exemplified with the album ending epic "The Unanswered Call", an amalgamation of ambience and electronic soundscapes with excellent East Indian guitar motifs. Other notables include the chilling "God Particle" where moody atmospherics of guitar and electronics blend into an absorbing jam session and the feedback/loop filled "Ninth Ward" with its brazen blasts of wild guitar effects and spacey electronics. This is an album filled to the brim with jam band aesthetics and spacey atmospheres that make for a rather other worldly listening experience. It is best enjoyed with a good set of headphones. Recommended for psychedelic and space fans everywhere. **** Jon Neudorf/SOT
BASE3- Live From Earth Exploring the hypnotic low-end, the avant-garde power trio of Base 3 probes into the dark depths of experimental post-rock. With the lineup of Tim Motzer (baritone guitar/electronics), Barry Meehan (bass/electronics), & Doug Hirlinger (drums/percussion) the seminal groove vibe is persistent throughout Live From Earth, as the organic jam session finds itself induced by various electronic nuances/samples as well as feedback, electric hum run through effects, phasing, and delay to spring the opposition to any paint by numbers scheme. The album itself is bold with the musical faction sounding cinematic, like a soundtrack to an edgy film, with a jazz influence in "God Particle" & "Killshot," semi-industrial chill on "The Collider," and a free-form frenzy on "Aftershock." Live From Earth may not be all out melodic, but at least it's real, honest, and interesting - as being a pop band is not the priority for Base 3; the record is most certainly a headphone listening experience where you feel engulfed in the music with it's raw magnetism. ****Tommy Hash/Ytsejam

"Guitarist/composer Tim Motzer finds infinite joy in diversity. His output as a leader and sideman crisscrosses multiple musical universes, including jazz, fusion, hiphop, soul, electronica, and the avantgarde. Motzer gets to explore these genres and the intersections between them via his ubiquitous presence in the wildly deep and varied Philly scene." Guitar Player Magazine

TIM MOTZER + MARKUS REUTER - DESCENDING (1K018) Philadelphia guitarist Tim Motzer and German touch guitarist Markus Reuter's duo project of ethereal soundscapes features UK flautist Theo Travis, the gorgeous pedal steel work of BJ Cole (the Orb, Brian Eno), Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stickment, xtc) glitch electronics, and spatial cymbal work by Doug Hirlinger. A stunningly beautiful record. This CD is packaged in a full colour off-set print 4 panel digipak.
Descending reviews:
"Descending is all about atmosphere and drift, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. Guitarist Tim Motzer and touch guitarist Markus Reuter both have plenty of experience with ambient six-string sound, giving their pieces more backbone than most sonic clouds – the quieter work of David Torn is a touchstone. There’s nothing here that has any kind of real drive, mind you, but the leaders – joined by notable sidefolk, including percussionists Pat Mastelotto and Doug Hirlinger, flautist Theo Travis and pedal steel maestro BJ Cole – know how to add just enough filigrees, layers and details to require active listening. “Ritual Observance,” “Sound of the Sun” and the long, flowing “Emanuella” can hang in the air like aural mist if that’s what you prefer, but give them closer attention and the haunting textures will give back more than they ask for." Michael Toland The Big Takeover
*****
"Guitarist Robert Fripp often performs his ethereal ‘soundscapes’ concerts in churches, where he finds the quality of listening to be more attentive. Working in that area of ‘soundscapes’ where music is able to seem still and the equivalent of a meditative experience in a church, are the guitar duo of Tim Motzer and Markus Reuter, who like Fripp use electronics and loops to create their sublime ambience. Their basic sessions were recorded in Motzer’s studio in Philadelphia and during an Internet radio broadcast. Then they had special guests enhance their work, including acclaimed British pedal steel player BJ Cole, who’s gorgeous tones feature on four of the six pieces. Also in the mix is Gong flautist Theo Travis, who contributed beautiful melodies and chordal loops to the opening two tracks. This fine ambient release is available as a CD from the label’s website and as a digital download from iTunes and eMusic." Chris Twomey Tandom
*****
"Joined by Theo Travis (flute), BJ Cole (pedal-steel), Pat Mastelotto (drums), and Doug Hirlinger (cymbals and metals) at various points, guitarist Motzer and touch-guitarist Reuter emanate interpenetrating layers of electronic and electro-acoustic ambiences ranging from enigmatic polytonal clusters to pensive atmospherics to coruscating deep-space pulsations—all masterfully transmuted into impressionistic mixes by Motzer."
