NU CULTURES @ 5 Spot, Philly

Thursday, May 15, 2003

quite an interesting evening of music last night
with the hauntingly beautiful vanishing peoples of the earth and our very own
Nu Cultures featuring Ellie Perez...this group hasn't played since last summers concert in the park at Rittenhouse Square...we're in the middle of mixing the new album and this was a great opportunity to try out some new songs and a few older ones with this phenomenal band...the show came off well, but soundwise on stage really bad...couldn't hear vocals, or instrument mix..the 5 spot needs to seriously upgrade their monitors and soundsystem if they're gonna continue live music...show highlights: ellie perez bjork-like stage vibe, monica mcintyre cello on 'nowhere', 'on the rise' live sailed up w a great mark boyce rhodes workout...definitely a struggle
for us soundwise...but the dancing audience really dug it... so there you go...Helene from Les Nubians was here and it was wonderful to reconnect with her...new Philadelphians, y'know! Lady Alma also was in the house checkin things out... a really nice turnout for our performance...thanks to everyone that came out and showed support!! thanks to ivan ross + crew for putting this great nite together. hope to do it again.

ILLAGE, tritone, philadelphia

Friday, May 09, 2003
since our mighty batterist, jim hamilton, was out of
town on a well deserved holiday, we had a few guest players last night at tritone for the illage
global inversion band
...with tim kennedy (tk)
on his vintage phenix, moog, and beatbox; and from nyc on
drums claudio rochat-felix (the keith moon of jazzimprov!). another tremendous evening of music
here at the tritone. the sets were amazing especially the moments of surreal alice coltrane, funk, secret agent rock, dub, noise experiments, fuzzswing, phat basslines, nasty organ soul,
collective free improv and amazing solos + melodies by the esp-like horns of chris cuzme, dan sears, and phil yaeger...another brilliant night...great to be apart
of all this...and hope we can do some more hits with this mighty lineup...recorded noisily to analogue cassette for posterity. snippets sure to
come on the 1k sounds page...mp3 style...soon!

URSULA RUCKER @ the black cat, washington dc

Sunday, May 04, 2003
phoenix rm 316

dave grohl and the foo fighters played here last night as part of a surprise aol live broadcast, and as a result our soundcheck is pushed back to 8pm with doors opening at 9:30...with 3 bands to soundcheck, there's not much time for me to set up all the gear and to get a good monitor mix for the show...as a result, ursula and i make the best of it during our hour set at the black cat. not one of our best shows soundwise, but some stellar moments: four minutes of fun with it's arabic workout and what? (which ursula, as usual, turned the crowd inside out on)...but folks here were great as usual and seemed to feel the show as is.
thanks to marc and vickey (as usual) for setting a great vibe.

NEW WORLD TRIO, rotunda philadelphia

Sunday, May 04, 2003

for those lucky enough to be there, myself included, this night was one of those rare pure moments of musical bliss. rick iannacone, notable! guit-artist with jamaaladeen tacuma, myself, and jim hamilton explored new worlds indeed. 90 minutes
of beautiful grooves, static loops, noise and feedback morphing into moments of asian-esque
soundscapes, ringmodulated afro-cuban workouts,
sonic metal shards splintering...and the iannacone guitar work! RI - one of the guitarworlds true innovators + explorers. (along with myself, of course!)...this trio is ready for the worldstage. as jim put it during load-out, " we should take this gear to philly airport right now and fly to japan." we need to make more gigs happen with this electrifying band. i'll be buzzing from this show for a long time. amazing. hopefully, we can do a record and some touring. this one is ready to go.
