northsea jazzfest capetown
travel with ursula and derek to waterfront + greenpoint market - acquired some beautiful artwork and a handpainted t-shirt to wear on stage tonite...i was superstressed tonite cause generally at festivals there is no soundcheck, just a line check...so i only have 30 minutes to set up all my gear and make sure it all works before playing the show...my nervous system is pretty much wrecked upon going on stage...we had to rush a bit to get all the songs played in the 1:15 slot @ 11pm...as it turned out it was a great set although i felt destroyed inside....we played to 1000-1500 people - and it was absolutely amazing!!!! highlights: what a woman must do!!!, adventures, freepoem, q+a...
watching this enthralled audience listen and respond to ursula's words with loud cheers and applause and screams of delight...this was ursula's night and i'm not sure she even introduced us...upon reflection...it was a stunning set and probably one of the heaviest sets on the entire festival...if only from my perspective. so many of the artists there TY, tumi,
soweto kinch etc expressed how blown away they were of our performance and also amazed at the guitar and all the roles musically that i played in ursula's project...it's always good to hear this after such hard work of trying to make something original and lasting...many new friends were made here - warm beautiful people -
aftershow wind down:
checked femi kuti (awesome) then off to hotel to the afterhang jam on the 3rd floor. hung with femi temono, david okumo, dr. phil from TY...all my new london homies 'at the door'. we were the doormen...haha..david okumo was hilarious like an old soul brother i've known for years...we laughed for hours messin with people...he reminded me of Foley (bassist from Miles)...many laughs and good times...lots of wine tonite. no need to sleep as we leave tomorrow. better to crash out on the airplane flights...stayed up til 7:30am...met alot of people who saw the show that came up to me to say hello and say how much they enjoyed the performance...slept for 2 hours then went to mountains (table rock) with some performers from TY...it was beyond breathtaking...no words to describe this really...first time i ever felt vertigo. we were so high up in the cable car and close to the edge...ahhhh....only a few hours before we leave back towards the states after being away for a month...it's gonna be strange bein back...here's how it all broke down goin home:
2 hour wait at capetown airport
11 hour flight to heathrow airport, london
2 hour van drive to gatwick airport
2 hours layover in gatwick airport
8.5 hour flight to philadelphia international airport
2 days....
exhausted, burnt, wrecked, and home.
capetown, south africa
holiday inn capetown room 2608
what a view from this room. next door are the dancers from femi kuti's band. all the musicians
from the northsea fest stay at the same hotel...so
you never know who you may run into...
arrive early am...greeted by festival hosts for northsea...ursula has some passport issues so we wait for awhile before moving on to hotel. as soon as we arrive we head for cafeteria to have some breakfast cause we are starving and run into dr. lonnie smith, james moody, and lou donaldson who will be performing later that evening...a long sleep
after breakfast until 4:30pm...head to venue and see casandra wilson perform, soweto kinsch and TY...
stockholm to south africa
stockholm sweden 2
a wonderful day to walk around stockholm
tonite (wednesday) will see Granada and Tiny
play at soder teatern where we played last night.
it's nice having some time off here in sweden...i really love stockholm...went and picked up my gear
at the theatre...checking on ebs pedal...airport says
my case has arrived and will be at the hotel that night...yea!!!!!!! all is intact!!! 6pm i have a swedish massage (whadya expect?)...really wonderful...and relieving all that stress from travel, lost gear....spent day alone at various cafes and walking the city...sitting at the window watching the street and life on it pass me by - lots of baby carriages - must of been a bit of a baby boom here - with smiling and some not smiling mothers - tall blonds in motion - lots of kids here -
concert is good - tiny is very bjorkish or iceland-ish...enjoyable...granada - very byrdish and after awhile sounds monotonous so leave and have beers at soder bar...then off to a swedish hiphop club...tomorrow we leave for an exhausting journey to south africa for the northsea jazzfestival in capetown...we'll have a 5 hour layover at heathrow before continuing onto s.a.
stockholm sweden
hotel sojfartenhotellen room 450
i like this hotel alot, we've stayed here before...the
people here a great...cozy...nite 1 relax after all the
travel...and try to calm my nerves from losing my gear...day two: scramble to replace gear so we can make the show happen tonite. hokan hooks it up...and finds most of the essential gear i'll need:volume pedal, looper, octaver, etc....i'm a bit worried but the show goes great really. i was missing certain sounds that i had developed but
it came off great anyway. the audience was fantastic.
this was our fourth time playing to the swedish and they are all so warm and open minded towards our music...just amazing. highlight: time, damned if i do...afterwards a hang at the soderthetern club. it's reggae night...beers with jeremy, catarina, and rob...nice hang. spoke to many people who loved the show and asked many questions about how i achieved certain sounds...it seems even though i was missing half of my gear, it still reached them...
i'm still worried about my gear...will call airport tomorrow again to see if they've found it yet...
philly 1kstudio july-aug2004
it's been both hot humid and wet wet wet = flooding conditions in philadelphia...what gives with all this moisture? anyway...my studio did indeed take water from overstressed sewer drains and a week later a blown hotwater heater, but happy to report things are back on schedule....projects, projects, projects::: lots on the recording plate at the
moment...finished some hot remixes with king britt that will be released soon: george duke's tzania which i was enthralled to play two tracks of acoustic and bwds electric guitar...check it out soon...yesterday completed tracking for the curtis mayfield reworking of little child running wild from superfly...5 tracks of guitar parts to be sent to king britt for some scuba-fying....gonna be a great one for the headphones,,,,next up some more collabs with music friends from overseas, and continuing on
many of my own songs and compositions....if you're around philly in august and are a dancer...check out
susan hess dance co on 2030sansom street. i'll be accompanying these master classes mon-friday until
september3rd with polish choreographer jacek luminski.....lastly, the burnt friedman + jaki leibezeit album that i tracked guitars on should be mixed this month in cologne germany at nonplace...and japan vocalist david sylvian has contributed to the album as well...it's becoming a monster of a group...more news to come on this exciting project and collaboration....liveperformances: aug25thphilly, i'll be joining fractal ark at silk city, sept 5th w/ ursula rucker at bumbershoot festival in seattle, and sept11 in pittsburgh pa....more to come.....
