Amorosi had to say about the show:
Nina and Ursula The Tower Theater was moist enough to grow mushrooms last Saturday night (June 10). The pressure cooker heat was perfect for Nina Simone. With a temperament to match her talent, Simone¹s voice held classical, gospel, jazz and funky hunky folk in its sway. Yes, she seemed frail, puffy, even a bit lost at times. But she still commanded attention in the way an old boxer would, tempting you to stare at the left fist while she punches you square in the face with the right. Simone and her band rolled through the anthemic "Young, Gifted and Black" and the rickety boogie of "Mississippi Goddamn" like a truck driver. All nuance came from Simone¹s broken voice and her lightning fast, creepily instinctive piano playing. Simone¹s set, though far from perfect, was lovely. And for Ursula Rucker and Jazzhead guitarist Tim Motzer, opening for Simone seemed a genuine honor. Their set (faves and new stuff from Rucker¹s upcoming Super Sister) was like hearing the sermon on the mount before witnessing the crucifixion. While Motzer rolled his acoustic guitar, Rucker (this city¹s most forceful performance wordsmith) caressed femme-empowered phonetics and flava-filled stories of life in the hood with dangerous delicious skill. EDITOR'S PICKS Philly Weekly Clutch Cargo The name may sound like the catalog description of a Kate Spade bag, but this newly formed Philadelphia group is actually named after a cartoon from the late '50s/early '60s. Formed by Rolling Hayseeds producer George Manney, who plays drums and takes care of the loops and samples, the band--which integrates video art into its performance (hence the name)--is also comprised of keyboardist Rocco Notte of the A's, Tim Motzer (who's worked with King Britt, Les Nubians and JazzHeads) on guitar and bassist Barry Meehan (of Fractured Reverb, with Motzer). A winning combination, no doubt. Following Bar Noir's current trend of booking better-than-decent acts, Clutch Cargo holds the every-other-Tuesday position at the surprisingly cool, intimate (read: smoky) Center City lounge. And Brit-pop types will be impressed to know they're the band Sir Gallagher sat in with back in April. Tues., June 20, 9:30pm. Free.
