Philadelphia based Ovum Recordings and the Knitting Factory are pleased to announce an evening of rhythmic acrobatics with recording artists Ursula Rucker and King Britt at the Knitting Factory on February 19, 2000. For this very special evening, they promise something extraordinary that is only appropriate for an outing at the Knitting Factory. Leave your expectations at the door. BEATS AND PIECES is destined to be a legendary event with King Britt spinning an eclectic array of rhythms from around the globe and Ursula Rucker dropping new poetic works for the heart and mind, complemented by the witty aural essence of DJ /Producer Robert Yancey, III (Guidance Recordings). In his own words, Mr. Britt projects that he'll be dropping some old school, some new...challenging, rhythmic music for your ass and your head. In addition to verse, Ursula promises to leave visitors with a cassette sampler from her forthcoming solo debut on Ovum Recordings. Ursula's pieces and King Britt's beats will be further enhanced by the extraordinary skills of guitarist Tim Motzer (Jazzheads, SYLK130) and percussionist Doc Gibbs (Grover Washington, Jr., Emiril Live), in addition to digital eye candy created by Nadine Patterson. Ticket prices are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and can be purchased by calling the Knitting Factory at 212-219-3006. For those unfortunate to live outside the New York metropolitan area, the evening will be simulcast live on the Knitting Factory's website at www.knittingfactory.com.
ARTIST SKETCHES IN BRIEF
Ovum Recordings' artist Ursula Rucker is one of the premiere spoken word recording artists in the music industry today. As a poet and performance artist, she has enchanted critics and fans across the globe with her diverse repertoire, captivating vocals and accessible poetic verse. Since 1994, Ursula has shared her songwriting talent and mesmerizing voice with an array of recording artists and producers including King Britt, 4 Hero, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Josh Wink and The Roots. Each was drawn to the soft spoken eloquence, veritable sensuality and undeterred honesty which have become her signature. Ursula's most recent recordings on Ovum and Guidance Recordings, illustrate her growth as an artist and her ability to transcend the bounds of traditional spoken word recordings. Ovum Recordings' artist King Britt has spent the better part of this decade honing his production skills in house, funk and hip-hop as a DJ, musician and producer. In addition to producing the critically acclaimed SYLK130 and ground breaking dance trax under the moniker SCUBA, he has also remixed Macy Gray, Tori Amos, Paula Cole, and the legendary Miles Davis. King spins vinyl at top clubs all over the world (including a two and a half year stint DJing for Digable Planets and a longtime residency at Philly's Silk City Lounge) and his skills evidence a lifetime of soaking up a mindboggling array of musical styles.
